Spirituality means recognizing that there is more to being human, than the experiences we get from our senses. It is an understanding that our lives have a significance that is beyond fulfilling our biological needs which are driven by selfishness and aggression.
Basically, your spiritual side is the opposite of your physical side.In the physical, you see yourself from a position of lack, but in the spiritual, you look at yourself from a position of abundance. In the physical you focus on nourishing your physical body using the things that are outside of it. But spirituality involves experiencing a sense of connection to a higher state or a sense of inter-connectedness with the rest of humanity and nature: it gives you a sense of wholeness ,such that your focus is on everything else, besides yourself.
Some people experience their spirituality through religion ,but it is not limited to religion ,anything that moves your inner energy is part of your spirituality. If you still don't understand, just take spirituality as any form of inner fulfillment that doesn't come from physical achievements.
Spirituality is comprised of three core elements:
Relationships
Values
Life purpose
Relationships
You spend most of your energy on relationships that benefit you physically e.g friendships, lovers. Most of them are transactional in nature, you don't gain much from them if you don't have much to offer. But spirituality focuses on those relationships where you get maximum fulfilment with zero expectations.Such relationships include:
Relationships with nature: have you ever wondered why the elderly prefer the country side instead of the city?, anyways you can start small, plant a tree, nurture it as it grows,or get a pet,,believe me,you might be surprised to realize that you might have actually been giving a bit too much to people, and getting too less in return.
Relationship with the community. Again I'm not talking about taking part in community projects where you might end up getting recognition from community members. But just try to connect with the community even from an individual level,e.g always have something in your pocket, just for the beggars, greet people, wish them a nice day, make a ball for the little kids,,etc
And most importantly,Relationship with yourself. This one involves a lot of things, but there's one thing that's very important, that we always deprive ourselves of: self forgiveness. Some of the decisions we make are driven by the resentments we have towards ourselves. We want to improve our lives just so we can accept ourselves. We would rather accept our mistakes rather than accept ourselves, and what happens is that everytime someone points out at them ,we rush to defend them, because they are ours hey. But accepting yourself is more about being able to extract yourself out of all the messes around you,and face each new day as a fresh start, not as a chance to redeem yourself.
